In the latest DC shake-up, ShazamFuryOfTheGods moves back three months to March 17, 2023, preventing it from going up against AvatarTheWayOfWater this December.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods has had its release date delayed yet again, pushing back into March 2023. The film is the first sequel to 2019's Shazam!, which introduced Zachary Levi as the titular character, the superheroic alter ego of adolescent boy Billy Batson . The new film, which is helmed by returning director David F. Sandberg, will see Billy and his foster siblings facing off against a brand new threat: the daughters of the Greek mythological figure Atlas.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Shazam! Fury of the Gods has already had a complicated road to the screen. The film, which was announced in December 2019, was originally meant to be released on April 1, 2022. When the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of theaters across the globe and suspended countless productions, this date was pushed back to November 4, 2022, and then again to June 2, 2023.
This new date for Shazam! Fury of the Gods is just the latest complication for the DCEU, which has struggled to find its way to the screen in any form since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The only post-March 2020 releases that haven't been compromised in any way were Zack Snyder's Justice League, which was an HBO Max exclusive, and The Batman, which isn't technically part of the DCEU, though it is a product of DC Films.
While it seems that Shazam! Fury of the Gods hasn't had any additional issues with finishing production, it is still being batted around by problems elsewhere in the DCEU. With Aquaman demanding more time in post and The Flash still embroiled in controversy because of the erratic behavior of lead actor Ezra Miller, Shazam seems to be the only film other than Black Adam that the company is relying on to hold down the fort.
