Bart is starting to look like a star hitter and real leader, and just in time.
Is Bart ready to assume that mantle? Probably not just yet — replacing Posey the player is hard enough as it is, and replacing Posey the leader is a near impossible task. But it’s apparent that Bart is taking steps in that direction. He’s getting clutch hits in big moments. He’s shepherding a starting pitching staff that has looked unbeatable over the last few weeks. And most importantly, the pitchers respect him and have been going out of their way to praise his game planning.
The resurgence with the bat is crucial, but that is the most important development for the Giants and their future. Bart becoming a presence in the lineup and clubhouse, rather than just another guy, would go a long way toward steering the Giants toward sustained contention again. Posey changed the culture within the organization, but that won’t mean much if there aren’t guys who can pick up the slack with him gone. Bart is starting to look like he can be one of those guys.
In the short term, Bart's development is exciting. He's injected some life into what was quickly becoming a moribund season. Maybe he even hits well enough to propel the Giants into the third Wild Card spot, and maybe they even make some noise in October. Maybe! Stranger things have happened, after all.
But Bart turning the corner has huge ramifications for the Giants going forward, and that’s what’s truly thrilling to see. He’s not a bust, he’s not someone to write off as another wasted draft pick; instead, he might truly become the heir apparent to Posey. As impossible as that seemed just two months ago, that really is how good he’s been since his return.
