Harassment can come with a host of emotions, including anger and embarrassment.
All of this accompanies the career risk, whether real or perceived, since her job requires maintaining relationships.
Unfortunately, in Harrisburg, the culture and the rules that govern sexual harassment have yet to catch up. Lobbyists, unlike government employees, have no avenue to report complaints. Currently, a woman’s only recourse is to confide in leadership at her company or organization. And with any luck, her bosses back her up and do what they can to protect her.
But lawmakers now have a unique opportunity to address this. Everyone should be safe under the capitol dome, and if they aren’t, there should be consequences. Last session, Rep. Kate Klunk introduced a resolution that would go a long way in changing the culture in Harrisburg. It is my hope that these changes are adopted for the current legislative session. Recently, organizations and lobbying firms have joined lobbyists in publicly supporting changes to House rules. These rules would extend due process to anyone who experiences harassment from a House member while they are engaging in official duties or while in a House owned or leased facility.
And although politics is politics in Harrisburg, these changes are not political. Instead, it’s about the ability for everyone - especially women - to be safe while they do their jobs.
