Black sororities, which were mostly founded in the early 1900s, have used their platforms to combat sexism, racism and inequalities in education and economics. They have advocated for change and inspired generations. They have served as extended family and support systems for so many.
I’m certain someone in the Texas legislature is plotting the same: to remove anything Black, Hispanic or any other group that represents people of color on college campuses. They’ll probably say that these groups embrace critical race theory or “woke” rhetoric to add flames to the fire.
"These organizations were founded to provide Black students a network and share a commonalty of purpose. You see yourselves as sisters who share a historical reference that's bigger than ourselves," she said. Wouldn't that be great? A world in which racism, sexism or any discriminatory practice does not exist? But it's certainly not the world in which we live today.
