Officials said this was triggered by severe weather conditions.
"Community monitoring has been ongoing throughout the day and BP advises they expect the situation to be resolved in the coming hours. They further advise there is no danger to the community at this time," Porter County officials said in a written statement. Portage Police in Indiana said the 911 center received hundreds of calls within several minutes Saturday evening reporting the strange odor throught the city.
Portage Police said there is no known threat to the public according to NIPSCO and the Portage Fire Deparment but wrote,"We understand the frustration with the lack of additional information and we will attempt to get any updates out when we have it."
