Chavez head football coach named to fill Rayburn’s vacancy
Sergio Gonzalez is joined by his wife Analia at the Pasadena ISD school board meeting Tuesday night following the announcement that he has been named Sam Rayburn's new head football coach.With a simple announcement at Tuesday night’s Pasadena ISD school board meeting, Sergio Gonzalez traded a school with a football program that has just 21 seasons of history to one that has 58.
With other recent stops at Katy Paetow and even Dobie as an assistant, Sergio Gonzalez will be just a short drive through the Washburn Tunnel, a left on Clinton Drive and then to Galena Park High School where he was a member of a memorable Yellowjackets team. Three of the victories arrived on the final play of the game or forced overtime that led to a win in sudden death. Tack on wins over Forest Brook and Crosby that saw fourth-quarter rallies and it truly was a season that longtime Yellowjacket fans still recall with fondness.
Sam Rayburn has never had a 10-0 season, but Texans fans will just be ecstatic if a Texans team can somewhat duplicate what that 2004 Galena Park squad did and that’s to end droughts and start turning some heads.
