Trone is vying to be the newest Democrat to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate.

A Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Maryland is facing criticism Friday for making a racial slip-up and delivering an accused campaign speech during a congressional hearing.

OMB Director Shalanda Young, the panelist Trone was directing his remarks, is African American. When pressed by The National Desk , Trone immediately apologized and said he believed he has White privilege. Hours before Trone made controversial committee comments on Thursday, he posted on social media about fighting to end racial injustices and promote civil rights.

Trone abruptly left the committee hearing after his amendment failed to receive enough votes to pass. As soon as Trone left the hearing, his comments were criticized by Rep. Drew Ferguson, R-Ga.
