FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A group of Democrats in the State Senate are demanding an explanation for the number of ballots being rejected in the ongoing Special Primary in Alaska.

On Tuesday, June 14, the group sent a letter to the Division of Elections and Lieutenant Governor Kevin Meyer calling the rate of rejection “staggering and unacceptable.” In particular, the Senators pointed to rejection rates between 9 percent and 18 percent in locations from Mountain View in Anchorage to the Yukon Delta and Bethel.

The letter was signed by Senators Bill Wielechowski, Tom Begich, Elvi Gray-Jackson, Scott Kawasaki, Jesse Kiehl and Donald Olson. According to data from the Division of Elections, as of June 15, the rate of ballot rejection around the state of Alaska as a whole stands at 3.99 percent.
