McConnell garnered 37 votes to Scott’s 10, with one senator voting “present” in the secret-ballot election.
His victory came after senators voted down a Cruz motion to delay the elections until after the Dec. 6 runoff in the Georgia Senate race.
In contrast, Senate Republicans spent hours this week locked in intense closed-door debates about how the conference should function. “For the last two years the Republican Senate Minority did not use all the tools at its disposal, and I think that was a mistake,” Cruz said. Cruz acknowledged that this week was just a start of his attempts to sell a more confrontational approach to the rest of his colleagues.
He identified examples passed this session such as a bipartisan infrastructure bill, legislation to promote domestic semiconductor manufacturing and school safety measures.
