Bipartisan legislation would make it harder for members of Congress to object to...

— as a Senate committee advanced the legislation Tuesday.

Other Republicans on the committee, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, praised the bill as"common sense" as it passed on a 14-1 vote. Cruz led an effort in the Senate to delay certifying Biden’s election win and objected to Arizona’s electoral votes less than an hour before demonstrators breached the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, pointing to “unprecedented” — and unproven — allegations of voter fraud.

The legislation would lift the threshold required to raise such an objection, requiring one-fifth of members of both the House and Senate to do so. It would also make clear that vice presidents cannot intervene in the certification of an election as former President Donald Trump pressured former Vice President Mike Pence to do in 2020.
