The change is, in some ways, symbolic. Ms Le Pen is not retiring but stepped down to concentrate on managing the RN’s parliamentary lawmakers: in the June elections, their numbers jumped from just eight to 89 deputies in the 577-member National Assembly. Few doubt that she will be the party’s nominee in the next presidential elections, scheduled for 2027, after reaching the run-offs against President Emmanual Macron this year and in 2017.
