Katherine Braner, the former No. 2 in the office, to be interim leader while county searches for a replacement for the retired Randy Mize

Katherine Braner, a veteran defense attorney who has spent nearly all of her career with the Office of the Public Defender, will be the interim leader of the office while the search for a permanent chief is underway.

Braner has been working as the chief deputy, the No. 2 position, in the office since 2017. She takes over from Randy Mize, who was appointed to the top job in 2017 and retired on Friday. The office represents people charged with crimes who cannot afford private lawyers and represents the vast majority of those charged in the local state courts.

Meanwhile, the county launched a search last week for Mize’s replacement to run the office, which has a budget this year of $127 million and 532 employees. The job posting says the ideal candidate is a “visionary leader who will center their leadership around the concepts of restorative justice, diversity, inclusion and belonging, and foster an environment of defenders who are passionate, skilled, and ardent client advocates.

A second lawyer said she was not hired on full time as punishment for her outside political activities. Her case settled for $900,000 before trial. In both cases, county lawyers said there was no animus behind the separate hiring decisions, and that both lawyers did not perform well at a tenure review panel that helps decide whether lawyers should be hired on permanently.
