Vista Superior Court Judge Michael Washington, who spent years of his career in the Public Defender's Office, will not oversee criminal cases while the matter is pending
The search for San Diego County’s next public defender is on hold after a Vista Superior Court judge filed a lawsuit over his disputed eligibility for the job.
The court didn’t say whether there were any pending criminal matters before Washington that were reassigned.According to his lawsuit, filed Aug. 15 in San Diego Superior Court, Washington applied for Mize’s old job in June, but the county declined his application because of Government Code section 27701.
Given Washington’s employment, the case was assigned to a Superior Court judge in Orange County to avoid a conflict of interest.
