Fox News host Sean Hannity described the Black hammer thrower as 'another Olympic athlete who clearly doesn't seem to love the country she's representing.'
In a June 28 tweet, Berry wrote:"I never said I hated this country. People try to put words in my mouth but they can't. That's why I speak out. I love my people."
In Tokyo this week, Berry qualified for the hammer final, but finished 11th out of 12 with a best throw of 71.35 meters. Her performance was leapt on by conservative commentators in the U.S., criticizing her previous statements that the national anthem"doesn't speak for me. It never has." She is not the only U.S. athlete to draw ire from figures on the right, with Newsmax host Grant Stinchfield saying heIn a segment captioned"the woke Olympics," Stinchfield said he was delighted at the surprise defeats.
