While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke to YoungLove creator Matthew Cherry and supervising director Mark Davis about the creative process behind expanding the Oscar-winning short HairLove into a full-blown animated show on StreamonMax:

The show centers on heartwarming stories about life, love, and parenting across multiple generations of the Young family, particularly millennial parents Stephen and Angela and their daughter Zuri, who starred in the original short.
Matthew Cherry: Yeah, Hair Love has had a lot of different lives. It's also a picture book that's done really well. And so I think early on when we did our kick starter, we were thinking like, "Man, what would be the best way to try to expand upon this? Does a movie make sense or does a TV show?" And I think a TV show always made the most sense just because you have this family dynamic.
Mark Davis: Yeah, absolutely. With Hair Love, just Matthew's always telling me that he always gets tagged almost on a daily basis of young girls dressing up as Zuri with the cape on and the Afro puffs. And so just we're hoping that continues throughout. Once the series is launched, we want that same type of response from the audience.
She's really having fun with some more adult situations and conflict and she's really been able to deliver and she's such a find. And then we have Issa Rae coming back. She had a little bit of her voice in the short, but she's playing the mom, Angela Young, and Kid Cudi is playing the dad and Stephen Love. And so Zuri's last name is Zuri Young Love. And then we've got Loretta Devine. We have Harry Lennix, Tamar Braxton. So just a really amazing voice cast overall.
Mark Davis: I was sitting back and thinking about it. We did this whole show during the pandemic, right? And I've been in animation for about 15 years. And there is a certain camaraderie that you build when you're in the studio with your other coworkers and you're all focused on one mission.
