While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke to Adult Swim writer & Star Trek enthusiast heycasperkelly about his upcoming StarTrek animated shorts celebrating a 50-year legacy of animation, as well as how the medium takes stories to infinity and beyond:

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Trek is one of the most famous franchises in the world and has continued to grow in popularity since it first debuted in 1966. Star Trek has expanded beyond the original live-action series to include multiple animated series, beginning with Star Trek: The Animated Series, which hit television in 1973 and continued the adventures of the original Starfleet crew led by Captain Kirk.

Casper Kelly: Oh, my gosh. Well, yes. So obviously there was the original Star Trek live action and then that got canceled too soon, and then they were able to do the animated show, which is almost like a sneak season four and five of the original series. And then there was that gap and then Next Generation, and another gap. But now, we have this wonderland of multiple shows.

Casper Kelly: Absolutely. I am doing five promotional, they're making me say promotional shorts that are like three-ish minutes, a little more, a little less originally scripted. And I'm writing them with Claire Friedman and Aaron Waltke, and they're very fun. And I was talking to Alex Kurtzman about... Because he's a fan of my Adult Swim work, and he was a fan of these Wonder Twins shorts I did, that where things go very badly for the Wonder Twins.

Obviously, you're a Star Trek fan. I think Discovery was a great jumping-on point for a new audience. but where would you start a new audience off? We're going to see a Star Trek: Lower Decks and Strange New World crossover. Are you excited for it?
