Librarians were left astonished when an overdue book was returned after nearly 50 years – and still in perfect condition.
According to Orkney Library – the oldest public library in Scotland – it was returned “in excellent condition” after being kept in a box which had moved house several times. The library doesn’t issue overdue fees so the lender avoided a hefty fine. It added: “We don’t issue overdue fees so the fine on this was £0. But if we charged just 1p per day it would have been, £181.55.”
