Playlist for Life has rekindled lost memories for Charles, whose successful and hugely rewarding career with the Prudential spanned more than 30 years, the organisation has also been instrumental in introducing him to Norrie Douglas – another man living with dementia who has become a firm friend.
It was the power of music that transported octogenarian Charles McGlone back to his youth as a teenage butcher boy who packed in his job because it robbed him of Saturdays on the football stands, following his beloved Celtic. And it’s the music of his years that transports him back to his youth, when he whiled away afternoons with his friends, pressing coins into a jukebox in a cosy, corner cafe in his home town of Kirkintilloch.
Around two years ago, Alzheimer Scotland employee Jada was the organiser of church hall tea dances for elderly people when she became acquainted with Playlist for Life. Said their son, Charlie, 63: “My dad didn’t ever really say much about music, but my mum was very musically-minded. Charles is a man who enjoys settling down for an after-dinner game of cards or dominoes with his son and daughter-in-law.
Charles, who was diagnosed with dementia five years ago, plays four holes at Mearns Kirk Golf Club once a week, and also attends clubs for games of bingo and fun fair-themed activities. Molly, who has close family both directly and indirectly affected by dementia, drew her inspiration for the Playlist for Life mural from people with lived experience of the condition, including Charles.
