Professor Nicola McEwen tells SNP conference event that the 96-mile border has about 25 crossing points that would each need some form of infrastructure

But she added: “On the other hand, it’s an awful lot of traffic to go through not very many crossing points, so there would inevitably be pressures on trade crossing that border.”

At the same fringe event, Constitution Secretary Angus Robertson said it was his “expectation” that an independent Scotland would remain part of the Common Travel Area , which allows British and Irish citizens to move freely between each nation. Professor McEwen said she agreed with this assessment, adding: “We are as confident as it is possible to be that you would not require passport checks at the border.

“The Common Travel Area is already recognised within the EU treaties, and protecting the Common Travel Area was one of the priorities of the Irish government [after Brexit].” She said recognition of the CTA would be one of the things the EU would be “most likely” to agree to during any future accession negotiations with an independent Scotland., such as the M74, A1 and A68, with others potentially being monitored by cameras.
