Covid case numbers are increasing across Scotland as the Eris and Pirola variants spread across the UK and the rest of the world ahead of winter.
As the winter months edge closer, concerns rise about the impact of Covid as cases rise across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
According to the latest UK Government figures, in the seven day period ending on September 3, a total of 1,561 new cases of Covid were registered. The figures means that 28.6 per 100,000 people in Scotland are infected with the virus. This is a rise from 20.09 per 100,000 of the Scottish population at the end of August.
Eris Covid is currently being considered a 'variant of interest' by the World Health Organisation, with Pirola considered a Variant Under Monitoring "due to the large number of mutations it carries". An average of 328 patients were in hospital with Covid 19. Despite the numbers rising, this figure is still small compared to numbers at the height of the pandemic.
