After going 9-10 against the scrappy D-backs in 2022, the Giants started their season series this year on a positive note.
After six weeks of play, in their 37th game, the Giants played their first road contest that didn’t involve a time change. An effect of this year’s balanced schedule, all but six of these first set of games have come against non-divisional opponents.
Alex Cobb claimed the National League ERA crown with 7⅓ shutout innings and rookie sensation Casey Schmitt reached new heights as the Giants beat the D-backs, 6-2. Here are some observations:Continuing his electric entrance to the major leagues, the 24-year-old Schmitt hit his second homer in three games and collected four hits for his third consecutive multi-hit game to begin his career.
With a chopper past the third baseman in the ninth inning, Schmitt drove in his third run of the game, hustled in to second for a double and scored for a second time as part of a four-run rally that padded San Francisco’s lead, 6-0. Through his first three games, Schmitt is hitting .667 with two homers, five runs scored and four RBIs . On Thursday, his four hits made up half of the Giants’ total, but they didn’t need much offense behind another sharp outing from Alex Cobb.With 7⅓ shutout innings, Cobb lowered his ERA to 1.70, lowest among Giants starters and best in the National League .
