The technically minded convention last took place at the Pasadena Convention Center in early March 2020 — right before the country slammed shut due to the coronavirus. Now it’s back.

But the show did go on. Like in years before, thousands of free software users, developers, advocates and professionals came to Pasadena for the keynote speeches, technical talks, booth-filled convention floor — and to meet old friends and make new ones. Along with day-to-day work, school and family gatherings, tech conferences turned to Zoom, and SCALE went dark for 2021.“In the months leading up to March 2022, Omicron had been spiking in LA and the U.S. in general,” SCALE Conference Chair Ilan Rabinovich recalled.
