Johns Hopkins-bound junior, the latest in a line of lacrosse players, brings competitive fire, uncommon savvy to the field
With two older sisters who played lacrosse at Torrey Pines High School, Laurel Gonzalez passed hours at Ed Burke Field on game days, cradling a ball in the web of her stick.“She didn’t have to drag me. I loved it,” said Jay Gonzalez, Laurel’s father. “She was my little partner all those years.”Gonzalez would play lacrosse at Torrey. The lone unknown was how good she would become.Gonzalez made the varsity as a freshman. As a sophomore in 2022, she earned second-team All-CIF honors.
The Falcons are off to a 2-1 start, the loss coming 6-3 to Santa Ana Foothill, one of the best teams in the state. Gonzalez leads Torrey in scoring with nine goals and six assists. She also handles the draw for the Falcons and typically dominates one of the most important aspects of the game. Laurel eventually dropped flag football and basketball to focus on lacrosse and soccer. Flag football becomes a sanctioned CIF sport in August. Gonzalez, who played quarterback in her youth, said if Torrey Pines fields a team, “I’d definitely be interested.”
Torrey rallied to win 4-2. Gonzalez scored three of the goals and was interviewed by a local TV station after the win.From 2016-18, Torrey Pines was the dominant girls lacrosse program in the section, winning three straight Open Division titles. A Falcon was named section player of the year all three seasons.That’s a sore subject for this year’s team, especially after losing 10-9 to arch rival La Costa Canyon in the Open quarterfinals last season.
