“As long as the Creator’s given me my mind and my health and if I can help people, I will.”
“My strength came from the old people,” she says, recalling time spent learning traditional practices and stories from elders growing up. “Those were the degrees that we earned,” she adds., who lived in tent communities on the outskirts of Saskatoon during the first few decades of the 20th century, after relocating from their traditional home further south of the city near Dundurn.
It was often a tough life, but Cummings has fond memories of waking up cozy in her family’s home, even in the dead of winter. By the late ‘60s, Saskatchewan Metis were organizing politically around what would become today’s Metis Nation — Saskatchewan . This included the formation of the Gabriel Dumont Local #11 for Metis people around Saskatoon. Cummings and her uncle were among the founders.
“We became one of the strongest women’s organizations in Canada,” Cummings says, pointing to work providing counselling, daycare and housing services. She says the successes came from empowering people.
