Saskatchewan's Court of King's Bench is adding five new judges to manage the workload it faces, according to Chief Justice Martel Popescul.

In July and August 2020, judges again worked to clear a backlog of pre-trial conferences. The only area where things were behind was jury trials.

“The bottom line is, we were able to get the job done, despite some very difficult circumstances,” Popescul said, later noting he couldn’t be more proud of the judges he oversees for their pandemic-related efforts. And courts are seeing more people represent themselves without a lawyer, which shifts the burden of research on to judges, who must try to ensure a person is dealt with fairly in the absence of legal assistance.

While lawyers and the parties they represent haven’t had to spend as much time in court, the judge has no less work in reaching a decision on a case. And since the process was introduced in 2013, uptake has increased, meaning more cases for the same number of judges.
