Brandin Podziemski didn’t come out of nowhere to become the first Santa Clara men’s basketball player in nearly 15 years to win a share of the West Coast Conference Player of the Year award. It only seemed that way.
No Broncos player had earned WCC Player of the Year honors since John Bryant . Podziemski was also the first Bronco to win the WCC’s Newcomer of the Year since Jared Brownridge in 2014. Santa Clara coach Herb Sendek, though, had a pretty good idea what kind of player he was getting when Podziemski left Illinois for the South Bay.
