Sandra Oh approached her new series because she was looking to do something comedic. The role itself, and what it stands for, also demanded to be taken seriously.
), Oh’s character is also trying to rein in an outspoken professor with whom she has a complicated romantic history.
“Amanda was very, very flexible, and she really geared the storytelling based on our casting,” says Oh. Her character is not only dealing with the professional struggles, but also attempting to wrangle her rebellious adopted daughter and aging father. The latter only speaks to Ji-Yoon in Korean, a language her daughter claims not to understand. Adding in those rich layers of detail was a natural part of the process of development, says Oh.
Oh’s Ji-Yoon is also a “first”—a label that Oh, as an actress of Asian descent, has similarly been carrying for her entire career, as she breaks barrier after barrier. Among them, she’s the first Asian woman to win two Golden Globes and the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for the Emmy for lead actress in a drama series. “I have had a lot of time and experience to wrestle with it and to figure out how I am with a certain sense of responsibility,” says Oh.
“I’ve just been at this game longer, and I want to always be there for the younger generation who might have more pressure at this moment,” she says. “It’s great to be able to be a support for them. So in some ways, the responsibility is not spread out for a handful of us.”. Earlier, she’d done an interview with the Linda Lindas, the all-girl punk rock band who identify as half Asian and half Latinx. They asked her about how she handles the pressure of representation.
