San Diego police launch portal that allows sexual assault survivors to check on their evidence kits [Breaking]
San Diego police investigated the alleged rape and turned over the case to the county District Attorney’s Office earlier this month for prosecutors to determine whether there’s enough evidence to file charges.
Under state law, police must send kits to a crime lab within 20 days, and crime labs must test the kits within 120 days. The information could indicate to survivors that police are actively working on their case — and that survivors are “not forgotten, and that they matter,” Griffin-Tabor said. Testing on a kit that doesn’t result in evidence does not necessarily mean there’s no evidence in the case, and any evidence that turns up from the kits doesn’t necessarily mean an investigation will ramp up, Archambault said.
