San Diego firefighters working to rescue person from cliffs near Black's Beach [Breaking]
San Diego firefighters and lifeguards were working to rescue a person from the cliffs above Black’s Beach just before 10 p.m. Saturday.
A person walking along the shore near Black’s Beach heard someone calling out for help in the cliffs above and called 911 for help at around 8:45 p.m., according to San Diego fire Battalion Chief David Pilkerton. Because it was so dark, rescue crews had trouble locating the victim, even with the help of an overhead helicopter. At around 9:35 p.m., fire personnel in the helicopter spotted the person on the cliffs.
Pilkerton said it was unknown whether the person fell down the cliffs or to what extent they were injured. Before 11 p.m., the helicopter had to return to Montgomery Field because too much cloud cover was preventing visibility, so firefighters and lifeguards had to use ropes to lower down over steep cliffs in the dark.
Complicating the rescue, a group of people began shooting off fireworks near the glider port, fire officials said. San Diego police responded.The victim was located in a precarious position on the steep cliffs, so the rescue was very technically challenging, Pilkerton said.
