The zoo also participated in relief efforts in the wake of hurricanes Harvey and Laura.

Pending an assessment of needs and “access permissions,” the zoo will send “leadership, an electrician, a welder, and additional multi-trade individuals to assist in clearing debris, restoring power, and fixing facilities and habitats,” according to a news release from the San Antonio Zoo.

The zoo’s efforts stem from its involvement in Zoological Disaster Response, Rescue, and Recovery, also known as — an industry-led organization that supports “exotic animal facilities” in assisting each other “in times of natural disasters or catastrophic events,” according to the organization’s website.
