On Feb. 20, 1988 — 35 years ago this month — the mall opened to a sea of balloons and fanfare in what was then heralded as the cornerstone of San Antonio’s efforts to awaken downtown San Antonio from a long siesta.

Orlando Flores, then a student at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi in a sporting goods store in Rivercenter Mall.Annie Walker wasn’t cool enough for the North Star and South Park malls. So Walker and her friends found refuge at the new Rivercenter Mall every Saturday from 1988 to 1991.
