On Feb. 20, 1988 — 35 years ago this month — the mall opened to a sea of balloons and fanfare in what was then heralded as the cornerstone of San Antonio’s efforts to awaken downtown San Antonio from a long siesta.

In concert with that theme in 1988 was Ribbons, the mall’s frog mascot, which welcomed visitors on opening day.
