San Antonio airport sees record-breaking number of Thanksgiving travelers

People wait Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022 to collect their bags after arriving at the San Antonio International Airport. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is traditionally the busiest travel day of the year though wait times at the TSA checkpoint through most of the morning were less than 10 minutes according to display screens at the airport. After a two-year pandemic-induced slump, the San Antonio International Airport had a record-breaking Thanksgiving travel season.

The airport had approximately 347,110 travelers from the Friday preceding Thanksgiving through the Monday following the holiday. That is a nearly 4 percent increase over 2019. “Super excited about that,” Airport Director Jesus Saenz said. “It further supports that people are continuing to want to utilize the airport, but above that, wanting to travel.”

In 2019, the last year before the pandemic and the airport’s most recent record-setter, there were about 334,674 travelers. In 2020 passenger totals plummeted to 133,418 during the same period. Last year the numbers started to creep back up but didn’t quite reach 2019 status; there were about 317,104 passengers.

Airport officials estimate the number of incoming and outgoing passengers by doubling the number of people who pass through Transportation Security Administration checkpoints because it only tracks the number of outbound travelers.Ahead of the holiday, the airport set aside
