Why does Samsung skimp on the batteries inside its flagship phones? We see how the Galaxy S22 compares to Samsung's cheaper handsets
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is meant to be the company’s flagship phone. With prices starting north of $1,000, you might expect the phone to have the best of everything. But there’s one area where Samsung appears to be holding back: the battery.
The batteries in all of the Galaxy S22 handsets have a smaller capacity than the batteries found in mid-range Samsung phones costing a quarter of the price. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery, the S22+ packs a 4,500mAh unit, while the S22 settles for a mere 3,700mAh. Not only is that a downgrade on last year, when the plain S21 had a 4,500mAh, it’s a far smaller battery than found inside those much cheaper Samsung phones., a a $290 handset released in 2020 that came with a whopping 6,000mAh battery, helping the phone to last for up to three days between charges.
The size of the phone wouldn’t seem to be a major obstacle. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, for example, measures 163 x 77.9 x 8.9mm. The M32 with the 6,000 mAh battery, by contrast, sizes up at 159 x 74 x 9.3mm.
