How did this project first come your way, and how familiar were you with the life of Catherine de’ Medici already?littleI had read Antonia Fraser’s book on Mary, so I knew about where Catherine came from and things like that, but that was also years ago and I hadn’t really delved into that period of history since.
What were some of the aspects of Catherine – both as a person and a historical figure – that you felt resonated today? What makes her really exciting was her interest in every aspect of knowledge: herbalism, mathematics, astronomy, astrology, human behaviour, psychology, the list goes on. Her uncle was the pope and she was raised in a convent, so her relationship with her spiritual self was fascinating too. She’s almost vilified in history as this very dark figure, and she did do some very brutal things in her life.
