The charitable organization known for its Christmastime bell ringers is allowing parents and other guardians to choose presents for their children in locations in Newark and Camden set up to make toy annual distribution feel more like a shopping experience.
, named for the late Joan and Ray Kroc of McDonald’s fame, supporters of the organization.
The goal of the Newark location was to collect 1,000 toys for 350 Newark families in time for Friday’s opening. But that may have been more perception than reality, according to Steve Pasierb, president and CEO of the Manhattan-based Toy Association, the main trade group for America’s $100 billion toy industry. Pasierb did not doubt that toys were less affordable for some families this holiday season, though he said it was not necessarily because the price of the toys themselves had risen.
