When you have a film like Saltburn that will be heavily leaning on your cast's performances and specifically your leads, you need to make sure you find the people who will fit the specific roles you're looking to fill.
Bad casting is one of those things that can hurt a film and drag something that, even if every other aspect was great, back down to just good or even mediocre just from one casting decision. So when it came to her two leading men in Saltburn, Emerald Fennell explained to Empire what specific qualities from each drew her to Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi.
' 'Felix, the Golden Boy, could easily have been a cipher,' she writes. 'But Jacob Elordi came in to audition and made him so devastatingly real. The thing I'd been looking for was someone who looked like a god but was actually just a fairly straightforward, disappointing mortal — a lot of people were tempted to lean into a more arch, Sebastian Flyte style of audition, but Jacob's Felix felt like the sort of boy you'd do anything to snog in Freshers' Week.
