St. Augustine avoids 0-2 start by beating Oceanside in two overtimes
Two prep football programs with proud traditions met Friday night with both schools trying to avoid a rare 0-2 start to the season.
St. Augustine avoided a second straight 0-2 start when Humble Fa’alave-Johnson scored his second touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run to end the Saints’ second overtime possession. Before last year, the last time the Saints started the season with two losses was in 1998. The Oceanside offense lost two fumbles in the first period, with Brady Klem and Fa’alave-Johnson making the recoveries for the Saints defense. St. Augustine came up empty after the first turnover as a 23-yard field-goal attempt drifted wide right midway through the opening stanza.
St. Augustine needed just five plays to advance 80 yards to start the second half with another score which doubled the Saints’ lead. Palmer scrambled 21 yards for a first down at the Oceanside 39-yard line, and two plays later it was Fa’alave-Johnson breaking several tackles on his way to a 39-yard touchdown run with just 1:32 elapsed in the third quarter.
