Very sad news to report
A chimpanzee at Twycross Zoo was "his usual cheerful self" before he sadly died. William, who was described as an "incredible ambassador" for his endangered species, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, July 11.
Veterinary experts have also undertaken a full mortem to understand more, the zoo said. The statement reads: "It comes with immense sadness to share with you that one of our much-loved male chimpanzees, William, passed away peacefully yesterday."Late in the afternoon, our zoo keepers noticed William had passed away in his outdoor enclosure.
The chimpanzee is listed on the The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List as an endangered species. Between 170,000 and 300,000 individuals are estimated across its range, with the biggest threats to the chimpanzee being habitat loss, poaching, and disease.
