Opinion: Sacramento Democrats punish dissent on oil policy

Drive north of downtown Bakersfield through the unincorporated area of Oil City and east of Oildale and you’ll head into the Kern River Oil Field. It’s the third-largest oil field in California, which is obvious by the sea of oil rigs and drilling pads that dominate the parched landscape. During that short trip, you’ll be in Assembly District 35, represented by Democratic Assembly member Jasmeet Bains.

She’s a doctor, daughter of Indian immigrants and — until this week — member of the Assembly Business and Professions Committee. Speaker Anthony Rendon, D-Paramount, removed her from that key committee after she had the audacity to vote against a bill empowering the state to monitor oil-industry pricing and penalize companies for exceeding a state-determined profit margin.

She was the only Democrat to vote against that non-serious piece of legislative grandstanding and, apparently, the majority party refuses to accept any dissent on that issue. Not only did Rendon remove Bains from the committee, but the governor’s top aide chided Bains after she tweeted she was willing to stand alone to protect her constituents. “Alone and confused you shall likely remain,” retorted Newsom’s chief of staff.
