U.S. stock futures extended losses early Thursday after a higher-for-longer stance from the Federal Reserve pushed bond yields to fresh 16-year peaks.
The S&P 500 gave up initial Wednesday gains to close down 0.9% after the Federal Open Market Committee at its September policy meeting kept borrowing costs unchanged at a range of 5.25% to 5.50% but reduced the number of projected rate cuts for 2024, to just 50 basis points. The decline in equities alongside Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s press conference was not unusual noted Bespoke Investment Group, which produced the following chart showing the S&P 500’s average moves on the previous eight Fed meeting days and the latest.
