Award-winning author Rachel Toalson, a mother of six boys, writes young adult books covering the same tough subjects, such as puberty and divorce, that have been targets of book bans.

Told as a series of journal entries and interstitial asides, the book chronicles indignities bestowed on Victoria both big and small: being relegated to a tent while The Replacements snooze in a comfortable recreational vehicle, having her first period and perhaps worst of all, realizing that her father discounts her worth because she’s female.
“It would probably be easier if I were to be a little softer in the way I handle these kinds of things,” she said. “But kids deserve the truth; they deserve to know what it's really like to be in the kinds of situations I write about.”
