San Antonio chef Steve McHugh of Pearl restaurant Cured passed over again for a James Beard Award

McHugh long has been on the James Beard Foundation’s culinary radar. He earned finalist honors in the Best Chef: Southwest category every year from 2016 to 2019 and in the Best Chef: Texas category in 2020. The Texas-only category was created in 2020 as part of a reorganization of the James Beard Awards regional groups.in New York City alongside fellow San Antonio chefs Elizabeth Johnson and Johnny Hernandez .
This year’s Best Chef: Texas finalists included Tiffany Derry of Roots Southern Table in Farmers Branch, Christine Ha and Tony J. Nguyen of Xin Chào in Houston, Quy Hoang of Blood Bros. BBQ in Bellaire and winner de la Vega. While McHugh was the lone San Antonio finalist named for this year’s James Beard Awards, eight San Antonio chefs, bakers, bars and more — more than ever before — were named semifinalists.
