Two years after a historic blowout the United States and Europe meet again in the 44th Ryder Cup.
ROME — For the first time, golf’s premier team event will be contested in Italy.
Golf has of course undergone massive structural changes since that week in Wisconsin. This will be the first Ryder Cup without Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood or Sergio Garcia representing Europe since 1995 at Oak Hill. It’s the first time Phil Mickelson has not been either a player or assistant captain for the U.S. since 1993. The Americans’ top player in 2021, Dustin Johnson , is not here. Only one LIV Golf defector, Brooks Koepka, will be competing this week in Italy.
Simply put, the European stars have greatly outplayed the top Americans in Ryder Cups on European soil the last three decades. European players ranked in the top five of the Official World Golf Ranking have won 61.3 percent of their matches in that span, averaging 0.69 points per match. Their American top-five counterparts have won just 36.7 percent of matches, with a point average of 0.43 per game. But the scar tissue of past American rosters isn’t as present on these dozen players.
