Rutgers Athletics and Middlesex County have “entered a letter of intent” to develop a partnership that will designate a state-of-the-art athletic facility being built in Edison as a home venue for the Scarlet Knights’ baseball program, the two parties announced in a joint press conference on Monday at the West Hall in Middlesex College.

, the two parties announced in a joint press conference on Monday at the West Hall in Middlesex College.

Rutgers Athletics Director Pat Hobbs, baseball coach Steve Owens and program great Todd Frazier were in attendance for the announcement. The construction of the Multipurpose Community Venue will receive no funding from Rutgers athletics, a person with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media. There is currently no contract between the two sides, the person said.

“When we play teams in our conference, the fans are around the field and they’re over the field and when the big pitch or big at-bat happens, it’s noisy,” Owens said. “Creating a home-field atmosphere and advantage is really important. That type of atmosphere is also attractive from a recruiting standpoint and puts you in a different category. Kids want to play in those type of atmospheres.
