The evacuation warning was issued Wednesday for residents near the Russian River and its tributaries from Healdsburg to Jenner.
The warning comes in an area of the Golden State that was already drenched in a historic New Year's Eve atmospheric river event. A storm system started impacting Northern California on Wednesday morning and is expected to bring heavy rain and dangerous winds into Thursday morning. Forecasters are referring to the system as aas it's formed rapidly off the coast.
"We've got a series of storms, one right after another, at least through the next seven days, if not more than that," said Cindy Palmer, a forecaster with the National Weather Service."The next strong storm may be as early as this weekend. We may see rain again as early as Friday evening into Saturday with the next storm. We have another reinforcing system for Monday, another one for Tuesday, and potentially even another as we go into Wednesday and into Thursday.
Sonoma County is forecast to get more rain with this storm than it did with the Dec. 31 event, said Sean Miller, a forecaster with the weather service. The Guerneville area is expected to record about 3 inches of rain at lower elevations, 5 to 6 inches in the hills, and up to 7 inches in the mountains on Wednesday and Thursday, Miller said.
