🔴 Russia has warned Europe would face “catastrophic consequences” if the war in Ukraine escalates, as Nato countries held a summit that could see Kyiv’s path towards membership of the alliance accelerated

Konstantin Gavrilov, a Vienna-based Russian diplomat and senior security negotiator, said the West was “already crossing all boundaries” and cautioned that such actions could lead to “the most unpredictable consequences”.

“Such decisions are in line with the escalation of confrontation and increase the danger of a direct confrontation between Russia and the bloc’s members with the ensuing consequences,” he told RIA. The comments came as Jens Stoltenberg, the Nato Secretary General, urged allies to hasten Ukraine’s bid to join the alliance by allowing it to skip the Membership Action Plan that is usually required of prospective members.
