Ukrainian officials said Russian forces are bombarding a chemical plant sheltering hundreds of soldiers and civilians in the key eastern city of Severodonetsk, but they denied claims by Russian-backed separatists that the plant is encircled.

Fierce battles continue on city streets and around the Azot plant. Russian forces, which now control most of Severodonetsk, destroyed a second bridge to the city, the governor of Luhansk province said. Russia, which is seeking to cut off Ukraine’s ability to send reinforcements or aid, “will throw all their reserves in order to capture the city” within the next day or two to take control of the Lysychansk-Bakhmut highway, a vital supply route, Serhiy Haidai predicted.
Local authorities in western Ukraine said 22 people were injured in a missile strike Saturday evening near Chortkiv. Russia claimed it targeted a warehouse containing missiles.
