It is important to remember that Ukraine has been living with an existential threat from Russia since 2014, when President Putin annexed Crimea and backed an insurgency in the east of the country - so the potential for further aggression is nothing new.
But a Ukrainian source, well-connected to the security and defence community, also said it was notable that Washington and London were the ones showing the gravest concern about the Russian threat, even compared with the Ukrainian government.
The various differing views and interpretations just go to illustrate how the threat from Russia is by design difficult to decipher - and to deter against. They have made clear through diplomatic channels from the heads of state and government downwards that they will hit the Kremlin with unprecedented economic sanctions at a minimum should Russian forces try to take any more of Ukraine's territory.
In President Putin's favour, he has proved himself to be a master at outmanoeuvring his western opponents in the grey zone.It could even prompt renewed instability inside Russia once western sanctions initiated by his offensive start to bite and military casualties mount.'Massive consequences' if Russia invades
