German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced Tuesday he has suspended the certification process for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
"With regard to the latest developments, we need to reassess the situation also with regard to Nord Stream 2," Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in Berlin."It sounds very technocratic, but it is the necessary administrative step in order to stop certification of the pipeline.". I have asked our Economic Affairs Ministry to conduct a new analysis of the security of the energy supply. Under the present circumstances, certification is not possible.
After Russia's"serious break in international law," Scholtz said the German government decided to reassess the certification to"send a clear signal to Moscow that such actions won't remain without consequences." Ukraine, the United States, the U.K, and other NATO and EU allies have long opposed the $11 billion dollar pipeline.I expressed gratitude for Germany’s decision to halt NS2. Discussed EU sanctions against Russia and additional support for Ukraine. I also expressed my conviction that in this new reality Germany can do even more for peace in Ukraine and wider Europe. Many argued Europe's increase dependence on Russian gas could be weaponized by the Kremlin.
