It has blamed strike action
Royal Mail has said it plans to axe up to 6,000 jobs by next August as part of plans to reduce costs. The postal network wants to reduce its total workforce count by 10,000 with the majority of this coming from redundancies.
Royal Mail chief executive Simon Thompson said: "This is a very sad day. I regret that we are announcing these job losses."We have announced today losses of £219 million in the first half of the year. Each strike day weakens our financial situation. Royal Mail currently employs 140,000 people. The Communication Workers Union had said 115,000 members across the UK were expected to walk out in a 24-hour strike on Thursday.
It marks the sixth strike for postal workers. Royal Mail has warned of postal delays as a result of the latest strike action.
